Department for Economic Affairs
strategy visualization

Canton Zurich's Department of Economic Affairs brings together a wide range of offices and responsibilities - from labor market services to mobility and economic development.

This diversity creates strong expertise, but also a heterogeneous landscape with different cultures, tools and ways of working. To create orientation and a shared direction in this environment, the department developed a guiding framework: the "Compass".

Our task was to translate this framework into clear visual elements that communicate the common goals and support a shared understanding of collaboration, innovation, and future ways of working.

Approach

At the heart of the concept is a compass metaphor that maps the department's dimensions and target states. The visuals bring out key themes - collaboration and knowledge sharing, future work models, innovation, and the digital workplace.

The goal was to build visuals that stand on their own and give employees a feel for the bigger picture - nudging the organization away from silo thinking and toward something more connected and collaborative.

By making the future state visible, the concept opens up dialogue and supports development across the department. Teams can spot synergies, share what they know, and align behind a shared direction for where the department is heading.
