Data plays an increasingly important role in the operation of public transport - from planning routes and managing vehicles to improving services for passengers.
For Zurich's public transportation company, VBZ, we created a large-scale Wimmelbild illustration to visualize how data is generated and used across the organization’s daily operations.
The goal was to make the topic of data tangible in an engaging and playful way, while reflecting the complexity of a public transport system.
The illustration depicts a lively, fictionalised version of Zurich’s tram and bus network. Within this visual landscape, numerous scenes show how data emerges throughout the system - from vehicles and infrastructure to passengers and operational processes. Rather than highlighting individual elements, the image invites viewers to explore and discover connections on their own.
In addition to the core themes around data generation and use, the illustration contains many playful details and hidden elements. These small stories and easter eggs encourage curiosity and make the image engaging to explore again and again.
The result is a visual narrative that makes a complex topic accessible while celebrating the vibrant everyday life of Zurich’s public transportation system.
