Digital Transformation for Eight Swiss Museums

Museums should be where their visitors are. Increasingly, that means online.

As part of digitorials.ch, a pilot project supported by the Migros Pioneer Fund, eight Swiss museums set out to advance their digital strategies, strengthen their digital communication, and reshape internal processes.

Together with maze pictures swiss and afkm, now part of Zense, we supported the museums throughout their digital transformation. We assessed their digital maturity, developed strategic foundations, redesigned workflows, and introduced new approaches to digital storytelling.

The most visible result was a series of 20 immersive scrollytelling websites. Combining text, images, audio, video, and interactive elements, they made exhibitions and museum collections accessible to audiences beyond the physical museum space.

The project also created lasting organisational value. Museum teams developed new digital capabilities, more agile ways of working, and practical knowledge that could be shared across the wider Swiss museum sector.

In a four-stage process, we assessed each institution's level of digitalization, co-developed strategic foundations such as mission statements and digital strategies, created new storytelling formats - and documented all findings on the platform digitorials.ch.

The results led to research projects with Germany's Kulturstiftung der Länder and an international collaboration with Leuphana University Lüneburg.
