Academies of Sciences Switzerland – MINT Microsite

Client: Akademien der Wissenschaften

Year: 2024

The Academies of Sciences Switzerland represent the country’s largest scientific network, advising politics and society on key scientific and social issues.

Part of their mission is to foster the next generation of STEM professionals by supporting a wide range of initiatives in and beyond schools. For the first time, these diverse projects are brought together on a dedicated online platform designed to engage children, teachers, parents, and policymakers alike.

Together, we created illustrations and designs for the microsite, a brochure, and a series of social media posts.

Solution & Approach

On the microsite, nearly 30 STEM projects are presented – each equally important, capable of standing on its own while contributing to a cohesive whole.

Our solution uses small illustrations styled as comic panels, enabling a fluid, responsive design. Users can filter projects by various parameters, with the panels dynamically rearranging into a new visual composition each time.

Key Take-Aways

Diversity

With the illustrations, we aimed to capture the distinctive character of each project while also supporting the diversity strategy of the overall program – which places a special focus on girls. This strategy seeks to demonstrate, in a gender-sensitive way, that STEM fields are open to everyone and that stereotypes around education and youth engagement are outdated.

User experience

For a microsite to reach its target, it must not only be well-designed, but also feel intuitive and engaging to use. This principle guided the entire design process and was made possible through close collaboration between illustration, UI design, and programming.

Alongside the MINT microsite, we designed a brochure and a series of social media posts to support and promote the initiative.
